LAVETT BALLARD (1970 - )
Stranger Things.

Mixed media and collage on wood panel, 2023. 609x609 mm; 24x24 inches. Signed, dated, and titled in ink, verso. br>
Provenance: collection of the artist.

Collagist Lavett Ballard creates multi-layered artworks focused on the subjectivity of the Black experience, womanhood, and reclaiming ones narrative. She states in her series Wood Stories: "In an effort to reimagine how art on the wall is perceived, I also create work that can be hung alone or as individual altars to the visual stories portrayed on each fence panel. I adorn faces with tribal markings, regal accessories, precious metallic tones, and a color palette that is often associated with royalty in different parts of the world..." Amongst the collaged elements, she draws on a wood panel with a torch to sear a history into the wood that already holds cultural significance.

Lavett Ballard holds a dual Bachelor's degree in Studio Art and Art History with a minor in Museum Studies from Rutgers University, as well as an MFA in Studio Arts from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. Ballard is represented in the collections of the African American Museum of Philadelphia, the Colored Girls Museum, and the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art. Galerie Myrtis, Baltimore and Long-Sharp Gallery, Indianapolis and New York, jointly represent Lavett Ballard.
