Additional Details

"The Paradoxes are Charles Estienne's free adaptations in French of 25 of the 30 Paradossi of Ortensio Landi. These were intended as examples to young lawyers who may be called upon to plead unpopular or difficult cases. Thus Charles represents such unlikely defendants as poverty, ugliness, imprisonment, war, ignorance, and women--attempting to prove that they are superior to men"--Schreiber 133 (1553 second edition, published the same year as the first). This edition not in OCLC or RLIN.
