Vellum leaf from a manuscript of the Decretales or Liber Extra, with text (X 5.31.18-5.33.3) written in gothic script, 40 lines, surrounded by commentary of Bernard of Parma, 81 lines, recto and verso. 7-line initial I in colors painted as a stylized robed figure with upward-looking bearded head extending into margin on recto, 4-line initial C in colors on verso; 1- and 2-line initials in red and blue, some with contrasting penwork decoration. 437x281 mm, hinged to mat; 2 sharp horizontal creases across blank lower margin, contemporary owner's marginalia, including pointing hands and doodle of head in profile. Additional Details

The Liber Extra was a 13th-century collection of church law subsequent to the 12th-century Decretum of Gratianus. It was compiled by St. Raymond of Peñafort by order of Pope Gregory IX. Book 5, from which this leaf is taken, deals with criminal procedure. Sarton II, 268 and 553-54.
