Transcript of inquisitorial proceedings in the case of Steffens and Prahlen, 2 women from the village of Grinau in Schleswig-Holstein accused of witchcraft, comprising testimony by Steffens and various witnesses, including her husband. Among the allegations against Steffens were that she learned witchcraft from her mother and brothers; denied God and holy baptism; made a pact with Satan, received his mark (a physical examination revealed her to have abnormally large birthmarks on her back), and knew how to summon him; often had unnatural marks on her face and body thought to result from beatings by the Devil; had an evil reputation in the village, as did her brothers and mother, the latter having been burned at the stake; killed assorted livestock in the area, including a horse given her and her husband as a wedding gift; and that 7 horses belonging to a town inhabitant died after a fight between his son and the Steffens’s. After torture with thumbscrews and “Spanish boots” she confirmed the allegations, also implicating Elsche Griepen, a cowmaid from Schenkenberg, as an accomplice. Accompanied by typewritten German transcription.
