Additional Details

Ledbetter was born on January 29, 1885 on the Jeter Plantation near Mooringsport, Louisiana. His was a hard life, working cotton fields during the day and playing his twelve-string guitar in brothels and juke joints at night. He was jailed numerous times, generally for assault. Jailed twice on homicide charges, he was pardoned twice, the second time after folklorist John Lomax heard him play in the Louisiana State Penitentiary. In 1940, Lomax brought Leadbelly east where he made several recordings and gave concerts. Leadbelly was one of the first Delta blues players to be heard outside of the deep South. He died a year after this Turner Arena concert.
