LEE BONTECOU
First Stone.

Lithograph, 1962. 495x645 mm; 19 1/2x25 3/8 inches (sheet), full margins. Signed, dated and numbered 6/8 in pencil, lower right. Printed by Zigmunds Priede at ULAE, West Islip. Published by ULAE, West Islip, with the blind stamp lower left. A superb impression of this extremely scrace, early lithograph.

The art critic and philosopher Arthur Danto describes the work of Bontecou (born 1931) as lying "at the intersection of magnified insects, battle masks, and armored chariots." Her sculptures for which she is known, especially those of the 1960s, impart an organic and mechanistic sensibility that sometimes conjure fear and terror of the unknown and inexpressible; this (Bontecou's first lithograph) and the following lot are no different. Sparks 1.
