LEE ELLIOT BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS. Post 1945.
391/2x251/4 inches. The Curwen Press, England.
Condition B+: repaired tear and minor creases in margins; water staining in bottom margin affecting image.
Elliott had made a name for himself before the Second World War designing posters for the London Underground and Imperial Airways. Tom Purvis notes in his pre-war book, Poster Progress, "Lee Eliott believes the poster artist must draw not what he sees but what he thinks, presenting an analysis with an almost childlike simplicity," and this is exactly the style Eliott employs here. A key made out of the logo of BEA and a beam of light emanating from the word "key" at the bottom of the poster. It is a simple image, playing with the orange and blue colors that communicates easily with its audience.
