Lee has received "a letter from the Marquis informing me that Cornwallis had collected his whole force, a feeble garrison in Portsmouth excepted, in Gloucester Town Neck, and that it was his opinion we should shortly have some strong work upon hand. . . . I understand Gen. Washington's opinion to be that they will strain every nerve to possess as much of Virginia as possible this fall & winter."
