Nelson Bowman Sweitzer (1828-1898) commanded the 16th NY Cavalry when he assigned to Lieutenant Edward P. Doherty and a battalion of his regiment the task of pursuing the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth.
