Walter and Martin Lehmann were twins who studied decorative arts in Dessau and Berlin. They were members of the Werkbund and did a lot of advertising work: designing posters, magazine ads and postcards. Their studio was situated in Stieglitz, a suburb of Berlin which was incorporated in the city itself in 1920, and the brothers included their neighborhood as part of their professional name. Their style was typical of pre-War era Berlin, utilizing flat colors and clear, bold typography. Many European cities opened establishments called Moulin Rouge in an attempt to capitalize on the magic of the Parisian cabaret. For the Berlin Moulin Rouge the brothers depict an alluring brunette appearing out of the night-black background, enticing viewers to follow her to the club. DFP-III 1974.
