LEO MARFURT (1894-1977) BELGIE DE KUST. 1938.
383/4x24 inches. Les Créations Publicitaires, Brussels.
Condition B+: repaired tear through top margin affecting image; horizontal fold; markings in bottom right corner; minor creases in image.
Marfurt was born in Switzerland where studied in Aarau and worked in Geneva before moving to Belgium in the early 1920's. Soon after his arrival he began working for a large tobacco company, Van der Elst, and their brand Belga. In 1927 he founded his own advertising agency, "Les Crèations Publicitaires" and went on to design posters for Chrysler, Remington, and Minerva as well as the British LNER train, The Flying Scotsman. Marfurt can be seen as the alter ego of France's Cassandre and Britain's McKnight Kauffer: he employs the same strong and sharp graphics, the same geometric approach and the same efficient visual concepts. Here, for the Belgian tourist board, he builds a simple and pure image with the sky, the sea, the beach and a sand castle bearing a Belgian flag. This poster was printed in several languages. Duchesne, p. 72, no. 97 and cover. Belgique, p. 53, no. 60.
