LEO MARFURT (1894-1977) BRUSSEL. 1937.
391/4x241/2 inches. Les Creations Publicitaires, Brussels.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds and in image.
Marfurt is Belgium's answer to France's Cassandre and Britain's Mcknight Kauffer. Although he was born in Switzerland, he emmigrated to Belgium in 1923 and quickly rose to prominence within the graphic arts community. He ran his own agency "Les Creations Publicitaires" through which he designed memorable advertising campaigns for Minerva, Remington, Chrysler and the Belgian Railroad. With his high profile he was the clear choice to work on promoting official state exhibitions such as this one, in which he juxtaposes a stylized antique profile with the contemporary architecture of the fair. Blue is the dominant color, but yellow provides a sharp contrast and serves to engage the viewer's eye. Le Coultre p. 306.
