LEON GILMOUR (1907-1996)

Cement Finishers.
Wood engraving on cream wove paper, 1939. 258x209 mm; 10⅛x8¼ inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 82/100 in pencil, lower margin.

Latvian-born artist Leon Gilmour didn't discover wood engraving until the mid 1930s when, at the age of 25, he studied under printmaker Paul Landacre at the Otis Art Institute. Until his arrival in Los Angeles 1931, he had been a migrant worker with only a small amount of formal education in first US home of Boston.
