LEON KELLY
Brothel scene

Watercolor over pencil on thin wove paper, circa 1924-30. 215x280 mm; 8 1/2x11 inches. Signed in pencil, upper right. Time stain, 3/4-inch loss, upper right corner, and 1-inch tear, lower right corner.

Kelly won the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art's Cresson Traveling Fellowship in 1924 and went to Europe for 6 years, living in Paris and traveling throughout the continent and North Africa. His first solo show was held at the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia in 1925, followed by an exhibition at the Galerie du Printemps in Paris in 1926. This early work shows the influence of the Fauves and Jules Pascin.
