LEONARD CORNWALL MITCHELL (1901-1971) NEW ZEALAND CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION. 1939.
38 3/4x24 inches, 98 1/2x61 cm. Whitcombe & Tombs Ltd, Wellington.
Condition B+: creases, abrasions and minor staining in margins and image. Mounted to board. Framed.
Organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, "this event's signature poster - an image of an attractive Wahine holding a pair of wreaths - was designed by Leonard Mitchell, also a leading painter and stamp designer at the time. His poster was in striking Art Deco style, possibly influenced by Chicago's 1933 World Fair" (New Zealand p. 353). The central figure is standing in front of the exhibition's architectural centerpiece, the Centennial Tower. New Zealand p. 6.
