LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) REGLISSE SANGUINEDE. 1902.
54x381/4 inches. P. Vercasson, Paris.
Condition A-: minor creases in margins.
Cappiello arrived in Paris in 1898 and quickly became famous thanks to his caricatures in the popular magazine Le Rire. In 1899 he designed his first poster, for Le Frou-Frou, another magazine to which he was a frequent contributor. The elegant lines of his simplified drawings were well suited to being enlarged and he imbued them with a sense of movement (which he would later call "the arabesque"), and brightly colored backgrounds. Following the success of his early posters Cappiello very quickly began getting poster commissions from a variety of different companies. Like Cheret, he used women to promote products, while keeping close to his caricaturist style. Here he uncharacteristically includes some background detail, setting the cold and blustery winter scene, in which an elegant woman helps herself to some licorice-flavored cough drops.
