This painting depicts the artist's first wife, Helen Fleck (they were married until 1930) and was completed while they were dating. They had met at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, as students and later married in 1911. Helen was also a painter of colorful landscapes. There is a painting by Seyffert from 1928, now in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum, that depicts Helen Fleck with the couple's sons, Peter and Richard.
