MacDonald (Max) Gill was artist Eric Gill's younger brother, and a prominent cartographer, architect and graphic designer in his own right. His 1914 Wonderground Map of London Town, a humorous map designed for the London Underground system, established his design career and is even credited with having increased visibility of the Underground brand and ridership throughout the system. In the following years, he designed other maps and images for the Underground, Shell-Mex and the Empire Marketing Board. He also designed map-murals and cartographic installations for the Cunard ship Queen Mary (launched in 1936), the British Houses of Parliament and the Scot Polar Research Center in Cambridge. V&A E.93-1924.
