Levi Wells Prentice was loosely associated with the Hudson River School, having grew up and been active in the area. He is most well-known for his meticulously rendered still lifes of fruit, like the present painting. Prentice's works garnered renewed appreciation after The Adirondack Museum's retrospective "Nature Staged: The Landscapes and Still Life Paintings of Levi Wells Prentice" which ran from May 28 to October 15, 1993.
