Lewitt and Him were both born in Poland and met as young graphic designers. In 1933 they founded the Lewitt-Him studio and later immigrated to England in 1937. Deeply inspired by Surrealist painting, their work often played with words and images. During the war they created poster for both the Polish and Dutch governments in exile. In these two posters Lewitt-Him, as they often do, use perspective as seen from the sky, playing in a surrealist way with the letters "MG", the transitional military authority overseeing Holland's return to democracy after 5 years of hostile occupation during the war. One image emphasizes the ties of the transitional authority to all the Allied forces, and the other shows the transition for war-torn battlefield to green fields and productive windmills. The text mentions that thanks to this transitional power Holland will rise again. A clever and unusual way to deliver such messages.
