Edward Mendel lithographed the text of the proclamation from the original manuscript, which was then in the possession of Thomas B. Bryan, president of the Soldier's Home in Chicago. These facsimiles were sold as a fundraiser for the United States Sanitary Commission. The manuscript was then lost to in the 1871 Chicago fire. Mendel produced several versions of this broadside; this is the vertically formatted issue with an engraved portrait of Lincoln in the upper left. Eberstadt, Emancipation Proclamation 35 and page 16. No examples of any Mendel printings are known at auction since 1995.
