Additional Details

John William Hofmann (1824-1902) fought throughout the Civil War, participating in the battles of Antietam and Gettysburg, but never advancing beyond Colonel, until appointed Brigadier General by brevet on April 1, 1864. Evidently, the documents confirming the appointment were not drawn up until a year later, two weeks before Lincoln's assassination.
