LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. Partly-printed vellum Document Signed, as President, appointing "J.W. Hoffman" Brigadier General by brevet. Countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. 19x15 inches; marked fading to text (mostly legible; signatures relatively bold), folds, remnants of hinging at upper edge verso, fold through paper seal with minor loss. Washington, 28 March 1865
John William Hofmann (1824-1902) fought throughout the Civil War, participating in the battles of Antietam and Gettysburg, but never advancing beyond Colonel, until appointed Brigadier General by brevet on April 1, 1864. Evidently, the documents confirming the appointment were not drawn up until a year later, two weeks before Lincoln's assassination.
