The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on 1 January, and was received at the newspaper by telegraph in time for the next day's issue. A story on Boston's New Years Day festivities reports at great length on a day-long celebration at Tremont Temple "in celebration of the emancipation proclamation under the auspices of the Union Progressive Association, a society composed of colored men." The remarks of William Wells Brown, Frederick Douglass and many others are summarized. A long editorial on the proclamation instantly recognizes its significance: "No instrument of more momentous import has ever been published since the Declaration of American Independence."
