Additional Details

Hamilton and Ostendorf's "Lincoln in Photographs," where the image is reproduced as #0-14, indicates the original portrait was attributed to Cole or Butler. The authors note that the image was ". . . widely reproduced on campaign ribbons of 1860. This portrait underscores the determination in the candidate's face. Lincoln liked it and often signed photographic prints for admirers."
