Additional Details

A speech from Lincoln's battle against Stephen Douglas for the United States Senate. Lincoln contrasts himself against the popular Douglas, who was widely considered to be a presidential prospect, and a fertile ground for potential patronage: "On the contrary, nobody has ever expected me to be President. In my poor, lean, lank face, nobody has ever seen that any cabbages were sprouting out." Lincoln also discusses the slavery question, and defends his "House Divided" speech against Douglas's misinterpretation. A variant edition was issued under the title "Reply of Hon. Abraham Lincoln, to Hon. S.A. Douglas"--priority is unknown. Only 7 copies of either edition are traced in OCLC. Byrd, Illinois 2960; Monaghan 12.
