LISZT HONORED BY A BRONZE BUST OF HIMSELF LISZT, FRANZ. Autograph Letter Signed, "F. Liszt," to an unnamed recipient [Gustav Adolf, Cardinal Prince of Hohenlohe-Schillingfürst] ("Your Eminence"), in French, expressing gratitude for the bronze bust of himself by [Moses Jacob] Ezekiel [on a monument in the garden of the Castle Schillingfürst in Germany], noting that Princess [Carolyne zu Sayn-]Wittgenstein heard his "Les jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este," and hoping that in November they could speak in person in Rome. 4 pages, 8vo, written on a folded sheet; marked uneven toning to first page (but still very legible), few scattered tiny holes with minor loss to signature, some worming to outer edges. Bayreuth, 18 July 1884

Additional Details

"How marvelous! My bust by Ezekiel placed in the park of Schillingsfürst! The trumpets of fame will now be sounded by the newspapers, reverberating this act of good will and affection on the part of Your Eminence towards his grateful servant. M.S. is almost jealous. . . . [O]n my insistence he has communicated to me the letters exchanged between the two Highnesses. . . . This is said confidentially, M.S. pretends feeling he must reproach you for lack of tact: to which I answered that he perhaps lacks good taste . . . .
"Princess Wittgenstein writes me that you heard played at her house my 'Les jeux d'eaux (Wasserspiele) à la Villa d'Este'; in the edition in which this piece is preceded by 'Cyprès de la Villa d'Este' one finds printed near the end of the stanzas of St. John, 'Fons aquae salientis in Vitam aeternam.'
"Next November I hope to renew viva voce in Rome . . . ."
