LLOYD ULLBERG (1904-1996)
An archive of more than 150 photographs and 2 bound maquettes. The subjects of this splendid archive devoted to Ullberg's work include architectural and urban studies made in San Francisco, landscapes, abstracted nature studies, photographs made at museums, and more. Ullberg's structured approach, with careful attention paid to tonal range and brilliantly-rendered detail, is reminiscent of many great masters of the medium, but also specific to his own concerns of rendering the world both in realism and abstraction. The first 4to-sized maquette with 66 photographs (including the front and rear cover), plastic spiral binding, signed and dated (1970) by Ullberg in ink on the last page (small #2 in pencil inside front cover). The second (also 4to-sized) with 40 photographs (including the front and rear cover), plastic spiral binding, signed and inscribed by Ullberg in ink on the last page (small #3 in pencil inside front cover). The remaining photographs are unmounted works. Silver prints, the images measuring 9 1/4x7 1/4 inches (23.5x18.4 cm.), and smaller, and the reverse, some with Ullberg's notations, and occasionally a date, in ink on verso. Circa 1960s-80s
WITH--Three publications related to Ullberg's work, including two periodicals and an exhibition booklet from the Robert Koch Gallery.
Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia
