LOÏS MAILOU JONES (1905 - 1998)
Artist's Sketchbook.

Group of 19 drawings in various media including crayon, charcoal, pen and ink, 1966. Each 508x635 mm; 20x25 inches (sheet) bound in a spiral sketchbook. 16 of the 19 initialed or signed and dated.

Provenance: gift from the artist, Céline Marie Tabary; thence by descent to a private collection, Paris. Céline Marie Tabary (1908 – 1993) was one of Jones' dearest and oldest artist friends; they met when Jones was in her first year of study in Paris in 1937. Tabary soon joined Jones, emigrating to Washington, DC in 1938 where she taught at Howard University. She worked as an artist and art professor in Washington, DC through the early 1950s before returning to France.

This sketchbook includes a variety of figurative sketches from life model sessions.
