LOÏS MAILOU JONES (1905 - 1998)
Le Matin à Spéracèdes, A.M., France.

Oil on canvas, 1951. 457x864 mm; 18x24 inches. Signed, dated and inscribed Spéracèdes in oil, lower right recto. Signed, titled and inscribed with the artist's Quincy Street, Washington, DC address in ink, stretcher bars verso.

Provenance: collection of the artist; thence by descent to the Loïs Mailou Jones Pierre-Noël Trust.

Jones painted many of these bright and colorful landscapes around the sunny and craggy hills of this picturesque medieval town. Spéracèdes is located just outside Cabris in the Alpes Maritimes off the south of France. Cabris was the hometown of her close friend Céline Tabary, and where Jones and Pierre-Noël married in 1953. She originally visited the town in 1937 during her first year of studies in Paris, and returned numerous times over a period of some 50 years.
