Exhibited: Loïs Mailou Jones: A Life in Vibrant Color, Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC, November 14, 2009 - February 27, 2010, with the label on the frame back. It was incorrectly dated 1951 in the catalogue - the thin second "5" was mistaken for a 1. Jones took her first trip to Haiti in the summer of 1954 after the invitation of President Paul E. Magliore. Jones only added her husband's last name to her artist's signature for the first year of their marriage.

This fine oil on canvas is one of the earliest and largest paintings by Loïs Mailou Jones of Haiti to come to auction. It was painted shortly after her marriage to the Haitian artist Louis Verginaud Pierre-Noël. In 1954 she was invited by the Haitian president and the government to paint its landscape and people. Jones also served as a guest art professor at the Centre d'Art and Foyer des Arts Plastiques, Port-au-Prince, where she met many artists. Hanzal p. 137; Tritobia p. 77.
