Additional Details

According to Porter, he and O'Keeffe were walking in Glen Canyon where O'Keeffe would scour the riverbed for stones such as the one she is holding in this image. To her dismay, Porter found the perfect stone and kept it for himself. The next time O'Keeffe came to visit, Porter and his wife Alene discreetly placed the stone in a spot they were sure O'Keeffe would notice it. Sure enough, the stone had disappeared by the time O'Keeffe left. The next time Porter saw it, it was in this photograph, which was published in LIFE magazine.
