Signed in oil, lower right.An early portrait by this important, African-American artist, of an unknown sitter shows the impressionist palette and brushwork learned from her Paris years. Awarded a Howard University General Education Board scholarship to study at the Academie Julian in Paris during the 1937-38, Lois Mailou Jones studied traditional painting subjects of landscape and portraiture. She did many portraits of fellow artists and writer friends, including Zora Neale Hurston.
