The first, inviting her and Mr. Rogers to dinner and adding that the evening would include an informal concert by Signor Vannini and Mr. Stanfield. The second, thanking for sending a bouquet of tulips for his birthday and quoting a couplet from Twelfth Night. Each 1 1/2 pages, 8vo, with integral blank; horizontal fold. 27 February 1881: "When I came down this morning I found the beautiful tulips blooming on the breakfast table to usher in my birthday. "And very beautiful they are, reminding me of tulip gardens of Holland; so that I had at once a reminder of youth and age.
