LORENZO COSTA IL GIOVANE (ATTRIBUTED TO)
The Pieta<>.

Pen and brown ink and wash over black chalk on cream laid paper. 223x167 mm; 8 7/8x6 5/8 inches. Ex-collection William Esdaile (Lugt 2617, lower left recto). With an early attribution to L. Van Leyden in ink, lower right recto.

Costa (1537-1583) was born in Mantova and joined Federico Zuccaro in Rome in 1561. Later, he was summoned by G. B. Bertani to assist him in his Mantuan projects.

Though the physiognomies, the clarity of the linear definition and the soft washes are entirely characteristic of the artist's style, the non-Manierist composition and the calm mood of its expression seem to be inspired by early Cinquecento art.
