William W. Loring (1818-1886) served in the Confederate States Army as major general, commanding troops in GA, MS, and TN, surrendering at the end of the war to W.T. Sherman. In 1869, he entered the army of the Khedive of Egypt as brigadier-general, serving there until 1879, when, having achieved the rank of general of division and Pasha ("Fereek Pasha"), he returned to the U.S.
