LOUIS CHARBONNIER (1874-1935) CHUTE DE CEINTURE À REBOURS.
23 3/4x15 inches, 60x38 cm. Publicite Wall, Paris.
Condition A-: minor restored loss along left edge; sharp vertical and horizontal folds.
Wrestling was a very popular spectator sport in Paris at the turn-of-the-century, and Charbonnier was a big wrestling fan. He designed an oversized poster for Paul Pons the World Champion and a series of panels "illustrating methodically the different types of holds [in wrestling]." (L'Affiche de Sport p. 115). This panel, with its clear illustration shows Charbonnier's interest in the sport. By contemporary standards it is rather incongruous to have an illustrated wrestling move accompanied by a sophisticated Art Nouveau flourish.
