LOUIS DELSARTE (1944 - )
Reunion.

Watercolor and mixed media on paper, 1998. 1041x1346 mm; 41x53 inches. Signed and dated in watercolor, lower right.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private Atlanta collection.

With its densely woven, colorful and dreamlike atmosphere of exotic music and dance, Reunion is a fine example of Louis Delsarte's unique aesthetic. This very large work on paper is also the first major piece by this painter, muralist and educator to come to auction. Reunion is one of 12 paintings in the artist's important series of large-scale paintings entitled Rhythm of the Waves.--In 1999, work from this series was chosen to be included in the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center's traveling exhibition, When the Spirit Moves: African-American Dance in History and Art.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Delsarte received a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and an MFA from the University of Arizona. Delsarte's work has been commissioned for several major mural projects, including Transitions for the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority and New Hope Visions at the Southwest Arts Center in Atlanta. Delsarte's monumental The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Mural: Dreams, Visions and Change, a 129-foot mural, was installed in 2010 at the King National Historic Site in Atlanta. His work can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Fort Lauderdale Museum, the Kansas City Art Museum, the High Museum of Art and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
