LOUIS FLOUTIER (1882-1936) ST. JEAN DE LUZ. 1928.
41x30 inches. H. Chachoin, Paris.
Condition A-: repaired tears, creases and minor overpainting in left margin.
Trained as a classical painter at the atelier Courmont in Paris, Floutier returned to the Basque country and settled in St. Jean de Luz, a small town on the French border with Spain. He was one of the major initiators of the Basque Art Deco Style, which adapted the Greco-Roman tradition to the local imagery. He also played a key role in the development of Ciboure pottery. Here he takes the common travel poster theme of a curving beach and adds an extraordinarily modernist approach in rendering the Art Deco architecture of the Casino de la Pergola, designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens.
