Additional Details

Born and trained in London, Rhead moved to New York in 1883 as an art director for a small publisher. There he became a key figure in the development of the poster in the U.S., creating over 100 of them in the 1890s. This panel of swans, along with a panel of peacocks, was commissioned by La Plume, a French literary and artistic magazine founded in 1889, whose contributors include big names such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Mucha, Gauguin, Pissarro, Signac and others. La Plume requested "large lithographs that could be incorporated into decorative interior schemes" as panels were a market that was becoming increasingly popular, successful and lucrative.
