Gleeson White, writing in The Studio, August 1896, opines that Rhead's posters "have tried to embody just as much of the spirit of Pre-Raphaelite art as the hoarding can bear." Most of his designs were for newspapers, various publishers and periodicals (The Morning Sun, The Century, The Sun, The Journal), but he also designed posters for perfume, soap and cigarette companies.
