Born in England, Rhead studied painting in Paris as a boy then went to America to be Art Director for D. Appleton, a New York publisher. In 1891, he returned to Europe, studying in London and Paris. While in Paris, he visited a show at the Salon des Cent of the works of Eugène Grasset and immediately fell under their spell. He also met the artist himself, and as a result of these two events, was inspired to become a poster designer. Back in America, he became a prolific designer, completing about 100 posters during the second half of the 1890s. His devotion to Grasset's style was apparent in his work, and although he has often been critically derided for his adherence to his model, Rhead is actually the only artist to attempt to transfer pure French Art Nouveau style to America. Most of his designs were for newspapers, various publishers and periodicals (The Morning Sun, The Century, The Sun, The Journal), but he also designed product posters, including three images for this perfume company.
