"'The Old Missions of California' are a series of twelve pictures painted by the noted artist Louis K. Harlow, these views being facsimile reproductions of Harlow's watercolor paintings. Mr. Harlow was commissioned by L. Prang & Co. to visit California for the special purpose of obtaining correct views of those old missions which are objects of great interest, being, as they are quaint reminders of a past age" (The American Stationer, January 30, 1896, p. 186).
