LOUIS RHEAD (1858-1926)
"She Made The Arches Of The Forest Ring With Her Screams." Line drawing for a color plate in The Deerslayer by James Fenimore Cooper (New York: Harper & Bros., 1926). Ink on paper. 13 ½ x 8 ¾ inches. Signed in lower right image. Matted and framed.

English-born Louis Rhead made his reputation in America during the poster craze at the turn of the 20th century. These brightly colored designs in the Art Nouveau manner of Walter Crane and Eugène Grasset advertised Scribner's, The Century, Harper's Bazar, St. Nicholas, the New York Sun, The New York Herald and other magazines, newspapers and books. In the 1920s, Rhead illustrated a long line of Harper's children's classics including The Deerslayer.
