Ritter (1854-1892) studied at the McMicken School in Cincinnate in the mid-1870s and initially trained as a lithographer. In 1878, he joined Frank Duveneck's group in Munich and moved on with them to Italy the following year. Ritter ultimately settled in Boston and returned frequently to Europe on sketching trips.
