Provenance Estate of the artist. Private Collection.
Louis Slobodkin traveled by steam ship to Argentina in 1928, returning to New York in 1929. It was during this trip that he created a series of plasters of sailors, the plaster for this work amongst them. The bronzes were cast some time in the early 1930s.
