Originally published in 1596, "the first systematic work on the whole subject of surgery written in England" (Garrison-Morton), written partly in dialogue form and based on the author's practice in France, where he lived for nearly 3 decades; the illustrations are derived from the works of Ambroise Paré. Lowe (circa 1550-1610) was a Scottish surgeon who founded the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow.
