Additional Details

unique modern illuminated manuscript by muckley. The title-page bears an illuminated frame containing three historiated panels, the text has four half-page and three full-page illuminated watercolors, all in a Pre-Raphaelite style, and with silk guards. Additionally, each opening letter for the four text sections as well as headings and the half-title and title-page are illuminated with raised gilt. Sir Launfal was one of Lowell's most popular works and its Arthurian legend a perfect theme for Muckley's romantic illustrations. The artist was influenced by Edward Burne-Jones whom he met while a student at the Manchester School of Art.
