LOÏS MAILOU JONES (1905 - 1998)
Le Grange du Château, Cabris.

Acrylic on canvas, 1989. 483x603 mm; 19x25 1/2 inches. Signed, dated and inscribed "Cabris" in acrylic, lower right recto. Titled and inscribed with the artist's 7th Street, Washington, DC address in ink on the stretcher bars, verso.

Provenance: collection of the artist; thence by descent to the Loïs Mailou Jones Pierre-Noël Trust.

Jones painted many of these bright and colorful landscapes around the sunny and craggy hills of Cabris, which is located in the Alpes Maritimes of the south of France, and was the hometown of her close friend Céline Tabary. It was also where Jones and Pierre-Noël married in 1953. She originally visited the town in 1937 during her first year of studies in Paris, and returned numerous times over a period of more than 50 years.
