LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1972) ELEKTRISCHE TAUNUSBAHNEN. Circa 1910.
34 1/4x22 inches, 87x56 cm. Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin.
Condition B+ / B: repaired tears and restoration at edges; creases in corners; abrasions in image.
Connecting Frankfurt with some outlying cities within the Taunus Mountain range, the Taunusbahn was one of the world's first electric railways. This rare image by Bernhard, (and one of his very few travel posters), emphasizes that the rail line is the "most comfortable way to travel." The graphic treatment of the image on an incline to represent rising through the mountains was reused many times by different artists over the coming years.
