LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1972) KONKURRENZ-FLIEGEN. 1909.
42 1/2x30 3/8 inches.
Condition B: trimmed on all sides; creases and repaired tears in margins and image.
For this event, the inaugural air meet at Berlin's flying field, "the foremost aviators in the world" gathered to compete for 150,000 Deutsche Marks in prize money. The translation can also be "the first aviators in the world," which makes sense, as this air show occurred at the very dawn of the competitive aviation era. In these early days of aviation public enthusiasm was such that allegedly 250,000 showed up at the event. Bernhard's image, in his trademark flat colors, fills the air with all manner of flying machines, dramatically silhouetted against the sky. This copy of the poster has been trimmed around the edges, losing some text (at the bottom), the artist's signature (in the upper left corner), and a box around the text at bottom. DFP III 161, Bernhard p. 33, Perier p. 11, Looping the Loop pl. 27.
